With the growing popularity of laser therapy in veterinary medicine, clinics today are presented with an ever-expanding array of laser systems—each offering different features, benefits, and limitations. Whether you’re evaluating your first therapeutic laser or considering an upgrade to a more advanced unit, making a well-informed choice is essential to ensure the best possible outcomes for your patients and optimal efficiency for your practice.
To support your decision-making process, we’ve developed a comprehensive comparison chart of veterinary lasers, giving you a side-by-side look at key specifications, wavelengths, power outputs, treatment modes, and pricing tiers. This resource is designed to help you quickly identify which systems align best with your clinical goals and financial considerations.
But we also know that choosing the right laser goes beyond comparing numbers in a chart.
If you’re looking to add or expand laser therapy services, it’s important to understand the often-confusing world of laser specifications. These systems are technically complex, and many of the specs—such as peak power, wavelength, and pulsing modes—can be difficult to interpret or are sometimes misrepresented in marketing materials.
In the following sections, we break down the critical laser specifications and explain what they actually mean in terms of clinical performance, not just promotional claims. By demystifying the technical jargon, we aim to empower you with the knowledge to choose a system that truly meets your patients’ needs and supports long-term success in your practice.
Wavelength(s)
The wavelength of a laser is one of its most critical specifications. Different wavelengths interact with specific chromophores in tissue—such as water, hemoglobin, melanin, proteins, and lipids. Some wavelengths are absorbed more effectively by these molecules and can trigger beneficial biological responses, while others may pass through tissue with minimal impact. Understanding which wavelengths are therapeutically relevant is essential when comparing laser devices.
Laser Emission Mode
Lasers deliver light in different modes:
- Continuous Wave (CW): Light is emitted without interruption.
- Pulsed Mode: Light is emitted in intervals—ON for a brief moment, then OFF—repeating at a certain frequency (measured in Hertz, Hz). The time between pulses is called the period, which is inversely related to frequency.
The emission mode affects how energy is delivered and absorbed by tissue. It’s not just about whether a laser pulses, but how long those pulses last, how often they occur, and how much energy is in each one.
Output Power
Often misunderstood, output power refers to how much light energy (in the form of photons) is delivered per second, measured in Watts (W).
- For continuous wave lasers, this is straightforward: the same amount of power is delivered consistently.
- For pulsed lasers, it’s more nuanced:
- Peak Power: The power level during a single pulse when the light is ON.
- Average Power: The total energy delivered per second, averaging the ON and OFF times across pulses.
It’s crucial to note that average power determines the actual energy delivered over the duration of a therapy session, not peak power. A laser might have an extremely high peak power, but if it pulses infrequently or for very short durations, the average power—and thus therapeutic impact—can be quite low.
Some manufacturers highlight peak power to suggest their laser penetrates deeper than continuous lasers. While higher peak power can momentarily reach deeper tissue, this occurs only during the pulse—typically lasting micro- or nanoseconds. Over a treatment lasting minutes, a laser with higher average power will deliver more total energy and potentially yield better outcomes.
Another marketing claim is that pulsed lasers reduce the risk of skin heating compared to CW lasers. This is only true if the average power of the pulsed laser is lower. If average power is equal, both modes will generate the same thermal load on the tissue surface.
Energy
Energy (measured in Joules, J) is the total amount of light delivered over time: Energy (E) = Power (P) × Time (t)
Although energy is often used to describe treatment protocols, it’s not meaningful on its own. For example, delivering 100 J to a cat versus an elephant—or with a low-power laser over hours versus a high-power laser over seconds—produces very different effects. That’s why context matters: treatment area size, laser power, and duration must all be considered for energy measurements to be clinically useful.
Power Density
Power density (W/cm²) describes how much power is delivered per unit of area. It’s a more useful metric than power alone, especially when considering therapeutic efficacy and comfort.
- Low power density may require prolonged treatment times to achieve clinical results.
- Excessive power density can cause discomfort, pain, or thermal damage.
Ultimately, it’s a balance between delivering enough energy to stimulate a therapeutic response and avoiding overheating. This balance is governed by both how much light is delivered and how quickly tissue can dissipate the resulting heat.
Energy Density (Dose)
Also known as fluence, energy density is measured in J/cm² and represents the amount of energy delivered per unit area. It is a crucial parameter for dosing consistency and reproducibility in laser therapy.
Beam Size and Uniformity
The size and uniformity of the laser beam influence how evenly energy is distributed across the treatment area. A larger or more uniform beam can improve efficiency and comfort, while an uneven beam may lead to hotspots or under-treatment in certain areas.
Laser Class
Lasers are classified by safety levels ranging from Class I to Class IV, based on their potential to cause biological harm. Class IV lasers are the most powerful and are commonly used for therapeutic and surgical applications. These classifications impact safety protocols, including the type of protective eyewear required and compliance with regulatory standards.
Most veterinary laser systems fall into either Class III or Class IV categories. Understanding the differences between them is important when evaluating equipment for your practice. For a deeper look into how these classes compare in terms of clinical efficiency and treatment capabilities, be sure to check out our dedicated blog post on the topic.
ENOVIS™
Enovis™ through the acquisition of LiteCure® owns 3 laser divisions with the following trademarks:
LightForce® which offers laser systems for the human market;
Companion® Animal Health which offers laser systems for the small animal veterinary market; and
Pegasus® offers laser systems for the equine market.
LiteCure® pioneered the development of therapeutic equipment for the veterinary market in 2006. It likely has the largest installment base of Class 4 veterinary laser products in the world and controls the lion’s share of the market. While never at the cutting edge of technology, the company makes solid products with dissent specifications and offers reasonably good support to its customers. Unfortunately, perhaps due to a change in the ownership, there may be signs of stagnation, as the company has not introduced a new veterinary laser model since – LiteCure® was sold to DJO in 2020.

Despite the statement on the company’s website, SUMMUS MEDICAL LASER LLC is a relatively new laser manufacturing company. It was previously known as in K-Laser USA LLC, and it was a former exclusive distributor of Eltech K-Laser S.r.l. products for USA and Canada. In 2018 the company started selling unrelated to Eltech laser products manufactured in China under the K-Laser name. The owner of the K-laser brand Eltech K-Laser S.r.l. sued and as a result K-Laser USA LLC was enjoined to use K-Laser and had to change its name to SUMMUS.
Summus’ products clearly have roots in K-laser heritage. They are most likely designed and manufactured as a private label by the Chinese company Pioon. Summus’ model H1 is almost undistinguishable for the H1 model of Pioon’s therapy laser.

For years, Multi Radiance aggressively claimed that Class 4 lasers were both dangerous and ineffective for laser therapy. Instead, they pushed their high peak power pulsed models like the ACTIVet and My Pet Laser, which, despite the hype, deliver only a few hundred milliwatts of average power.
Now, in a dramatic about-face, the company has released the ALPHAVET—ironically, a Class 4 laser system with specs that mirror those of every other major player they once criticized. Even more telling, the ALPHAVET looks suspiciously like a rebranded Chinese unit from RWD. Don’t take our word for it—compare the photos and specs yourself (see the RWD section below).

Aspen Laser is a U.S.-based company offering three laser models that bear strong similarities to devices produced by Chinese manufacturers such as GiGaa and Biophotonica. While sourcing directly from overseas manufacturers may present a more economical option, it often comes with limited customer support. Aspen, by contrast, provides domestic support and service, which may justify the higher cost for some buyers. However, those focused on maximizing long-term value may still find it worthwhile to explore all available sourcing options.

GIGAA LASER is a Chinese manufacturer known for producing a wide range of laser devices, including private-label models supplied to various companies in the U.S. While not an exhaustive list, brands such as ColdLasers.org, Class4Lasers.com, Aspen Laser, and Berman Laser are among those offering veterinary lasers that bear a strong resemblance to GIGAA LASER designs. If you’re considering a system that looks similar to the models shown below, it may be worth exploring the original manufacturer as a potentially more cost-effective option.
