Veterinary Lasers
A comprehensive comparison chart.
If you are thinking about adding or expanding laser therapy services in your veterinary practice, this article should help you to navigate the laser product landscape. Veterinary lasers are complex devices with many operational parameters that could be confusing, particularly when a sales person is pushing on you a product of his/her company making outrageous claims about the value of a particular specification that its product features.
Below, we will briefly discuss the important laser specifications, as well as clinically relevant parameters.
Wavelength(s).
The laser wavelength is one of the most important specifications of the light source. Some wavelength that are selectively absorbed by chromophores in tissue, such as water, proteins, fat, hemoglobin and melanin may have a beneficial effect on the body, while others may not.
Laser emission mode.
Emission mode describes how light is being delivered: continuously (CW), or in pulses when the light in ON for the duration of the pulse, then OFF, then ON again. The repetition rate of pulses or frequency is measured in Hz. The time between consecutive pulses called period and it is inversely proportional to the frequency. Therefore, the higher the frequency is the shorter the time interval between the consecutive light pulses will be.
Output power.
This is perhaps the most misunderstood specification of a laser. This parameter describes the amount of light (the number of light particles called photons) the laser delivers every second. It is measured in Watts (W). While this specification is quite straightforward for lasers that output light continuously (CW) as the same amount of light delivered at any given time, the pulsed laser light output is described by two parameters: peak power – the power when the light is ON, and average power, which is the total amount of light delivered by a laser by summing up light of all pulses delivered during one second (see the picture below). Therefore, the average power of pulsed lasers is equivalent to the power of CW lasers. As one can see in the picture, the average power is always smaller than the peak power, and even a very high peak power can produce low average power if the period – interval between pulses is much longer than the pulse duration.
Some companies specify the peak power of their equipment as output power without disclosing the average power, and use the high peak power specification claiming that their laser deliver light deeper under the skin compared to the CW laser. While this is not entirely wrong – there is more light delivered by the pulsed laser with the peak power higher than the CW power – this advantage lasts only for the duration of the pulse, which is usually only a few microseconds or even nanoseconds. For the duration of procedure, that normally takes several minutes, there will be more light delivered to any depth under the skin by a laser that has higher average power.
Another common claim is that pulsed laser delivers more light than CW laser without heating the skin surface. This is also not true – the surface temperature of a treated area will be the same regardless of pulsed or CW operation if the average power of the pulsed laser is equal to CW power.
Power density.
From the clinical standpoint, it is the power density (power per unit of irradiated surface area) that is more important than power. If the power density is low, the procedure may require long exposure in order to achieve a therapeutic effect, if any. On the other hand, excessive power density would cause discomfort or even pain. It is the competition between the energy delivered to the treatment site by a laser and the heat removed from this site by thermal conduction of the tissue that matters.
From the practical point of view, it makes a lot of sense to design treatment protocols with the highest power density that the patient can tolerate comfortably, as this will result in the shortest time of the procedure.
Energy.
Energy (E) is a measure of light delivered to a patient, measured in Joules (J). It is a product of the laser power (P) and duration (t) of the procedure (E=P*t). Many scientists and clinicians use energy as treatment parameter in describing their protocol, reporting only the total Joules (J) delivered. Unfortunately, this parameter is useless on its own. To illustrate this point, let’s consider first the role of treatment area. The same total energy delivered over the entire body of an elephant and a cat will most likely have different clinical outcomes. You do not administer the same amount of drug to a puppy and to an adult dog. Same here, just instead of weight, the surface size of the treatment has to be taken into account in order for the total Energy delivered to be useful, repeatable data.
Energy density - Doze
Energy density or fluence is the laser therapy analogue of dosage of pharmaceuticals. The same way as dosage of drug is prescribed in weight or volume of drug per unit of weight of the patient, the laser therapy dosage is expressed in the amount of light delivered per unit of treatment surface. This is the most relevant clinical parameter that needs to be recorded, tracked and compared.
Laser beam size and uniformity.
It is important to have a handpiece that that illuminates the treatment area uniformly. In physics, such laser beam referred as “tophat”. Otherwise, the dosage of light delivered will not be homogenous. Unfortunately, the so-called multi-mode semiconductor diode lasers that are utilized in veterinary laser equipment inherently deliver very non-uniform laser beam, which requires special optics to make it homogenous. Only Omnilase and Summus report the handpieces that deliver such output laser beam.
Before we move on to the reviewing laser companies and their products, let’s revisit the role of the output power of the laser. As the energy density plays the role of a dose in the laser therapy treatment, the use of a higher power laser will result in a shorter treatment time.
Below we compounded information on the specifications of the most veterinary lasers available in the market. We intentionally stayed away from reviewing the performance of each product – just data.

Companion® Animal Health is a division of ENOVIS™.
ENOVIS™ through the acquisition of LiteCure® owns also the following trademarks:
LightForce® which offers laser systems for the human market and
Pegasus® which offers laser systems for the equine market. It appears that recently Companion® Animal Health and Pegasus® operate as a single entity.
LiteCure® pioneered the development of therapeutic equipment for the veterinary market in 2006. It likely has the largest installment base of Class 4 veterinary laser products in the world and controls the lion’s share of the market. While never at the cutting edge of technology, the company makes solid products with dissent specifications and offers reasonably good support to its customers. Unfortunately, perhaps due to a change in the ownership, there may be signs of stagnation, as the company has not introduced a new veterinary laser model since – LiteCure® was sold to ENOVIS in 2020.

Despite the statement on the company’s website, SUMMUS MEDICAL LASER LLC is a relatively new laser manufacturing company. It was previously known as K-Laser USA LLC, and it was a former exclusive distributor of Eltech K-Laser S.r.l. products for USA and Canada. In 2018 the company started selling unrelated to Eltech laser products manufactured in China under the K-Laser name. The owner of the K-laser brand Eltech K-Laser S.r.l. sued and as a result K-Laser USA LLC was enjoined to use K-Laser and had to change its name to SUMMUS.
Summus’ products clearly have roots in K-laser heritage. They are most likely designed and manufactured as a private label by the Chinese company Pioon. Summus’ model H1 is almost undistinguishable from the H1 model of Pioon’s dental laser.

A significant controversy surrounds this SUMMUS laser system following a YouTube exposé that highlighted serious discrepancies between the manufacturer’s claimed output power specifications and the results of independent testing. The publication casts doubt on the credibility of the company’s technical assertions, suggesting potential misrepresentation of the device’s capabilities. This raises concerns about the reliability, safety, and effectiveness of the product, fueling skepticism about its suitability for professional use and its compliance with industry standards.

For a long time, Multi Radiance, which was founded in 2004, touted that the Class 4 lasers are dangerous and ineffective for laser therapy. Instead, they offered high peak power pulsed laser models, such as ACTIVet and My Pet Laser that deliver only a few 100mW of average power.
However, recently the company introduced ALPHAVET Class 4 laser CW system with specifications similar to all other major players in the field. ALPHAVET appears a Chinese product with Multi Radiance label (compare the model picture and specifications with that of RWD below).

THOR Photomedicine is a UK based company founded in 1993.

This is a rather simplistic device that consists of a console that allows an operator to set up the duration of the procedure and a light pulse repetition rate. The light is delivered via multiple detachable handpieces that house arrays of laser diodes or LEDs. There are no preset protocols, therefore an operator has to have a good knowledge of the clinically relevant parameters for the intended treatment.

RWD is a Chinese company with an office in San Diego, CA 92121 U.S.A. https://www.rwdstco.com/
Our attempts to contact the company were unsuccessful – there is no phone number, and “Contact Us” website tab returns Trojan infected script. It is hard to believe that the company is the original manufacturer as it offers a pretty wide spectrum of equipment that are not technologically related to each other.

GiGaa Laser
GIGAALASER is a Chinese manufacturer of a wide spectrum of laser products. It is notorious for manufacturing private label products for many American companies. Coldlasers.org, Class4Lasers.com, Aspen lasers, Berman Laser – this is by no means a complete list of companies that sell Chinese veterinary laser equipment. If you are offered a laser that looks like one below, you may be better off going directly to the source. You should expect lower prices, but the biggest concern with the company products is the laser diodes of unknown provenance and reliability. Also, the customer support from China is problematic.
TRIANGEL RSD LIMITED, founded in 2013 is another Chinese company. It offers several laser systems for aesthetic market, also offers veterinary lasers. https://www.triangelmed.com/
We found it amusing that in the picture below the company veterinary laser is shown photoshopped over a picture taken from the Companion Animal Health website. Pretty sketchy!
Wuhan Pioon Technology
Wuhan Pioon Technology is another Chinese laser diode company. It does not sell in the US directly, but you will find the striking similarity of some of their products with the ones offered by other companies in America. Particularly impressive is Summus’ H1 model, that even has the same model name.
Excellent resource for veterinarians
Indispensable if you are on the market for a veterinary laser
